Curious About Changing Your Appearance?
Rhinoplasty is the second most popular plastic surgery procedure performed around the world! If you wish to alter the size, shape or appearance of your nose and facial profile, contact Refine Clinic today.
What Is a Nose Job?
You have probably heard the term rhinoplasty used to refer to facial surgery involving the nose. Typically, this is called a nose job, which is a cosmetic enhancement that can be used to correct imperfections such as a narrow nose or wide nostrils. A nose job can also refer to other nasal surgeries which can help with issues with your septum or nasal cartilage to help aid breathing and alleviate similar concerns. Rhinoplasty is an excellent option for men and women who seek facial symmetry and wish to achieve it by altering the structure of their nose.
Why Choose Rhinoplasty?
Have you ever asked yourself, ‘should I get a nose job?’ Your nose is the focal point of your face, and often the first thing people notice when looking at you. Many men and women who have struggled with a misshapen, disproportionate or oversized nose throughout their life have experienced a renewed sense of self-confidence following a nose job. Bullying, embarrassment and shyness as a result of your nose can often prompt people to wish to alter its appearance, for example. Additionally, patients who have suffered an injury that has affected the look or the function of their nose or septum may also benefit from a nose job surgery.
How Do I Know I’m a Good Candidate?
Our rhinoplasty expert, Dr Alan Evans, typically recommends this type of facial surgery as a solution for patients with defects that have affected the shape or function of their nose. If you have ever felt self-conscious about the shape or size of your nose, you may benefit from a rhinoplasty. Additionally, patients who have breathing issues stemming from their sinuses, septum or the structure of their nose may find relief with some combination of a septoplasty, turbinoplasty, alarplasty or sinus surgeries – which can also be called a nose job. Schedule a consultation to learn more about nose job surgery and if you are an ideal candidate.
What Can Rhinoplasty Correct?
Getting a nose job is a big step, so it is essential to research the rhinoplasty procedure before jumping the gun. Learning what a surgeon can correct with rhinoplasty can help patients understand if it is the right decision for them. A nose job should be performed by a highly-qualified plastic surgeon with meticulous precision and expertise. As a facial surgery procedure, rhinoplasty can help resolve different nasal problems, such as:

  • Sleep apnoea
  • Lost bone structure or mass
  • A deviated septum

Patients seeking cosmetic enhancements can often enjoy:

  • A straightened bridge
  • Equally sized and shaped nostrils
  • Facial harmony
  • Symmetry throughout your profile
  • A flatter or slimmer tip
  • A more flattering overall appearance

Teens and Nose Jobs

Rhinoplasty procedures are particularly popular among young patients. Many patients struggle with bullying or teasing from their peers and may even suffer from breathing difficulties due to structural deformities. If your teenager is considering getting a nose job, it is imperative to sit down with them first to assess that they are entirely sure it is what they truly want. While children around 13 to 14 years of age generally have fully developed facial features, emotional maturity is a vital prerequisite before undergoing a cosmetic surgery procedure. Some children may need a rhinoplasty or similar surgery earlier, however, if they suffer from complications that affect their quality of life.

Is Rhinoplasty Painful?
We work with licensed anaesthetists alongside our surgeons to help sedate our patients when receiving plastic surgery. This helps to reduce any discomfort felt during the procedure, so it is relatively pain-free. However, you may experience some inflammation, tenderness or redness following the surgery. Your surgeon can provide you with pain medication to help reduce discomfort during the healing process.
Will There Be Visible Scarring?
Dr Evans has been performing rhinoplasty and similar facial surgery on patients throughout South Africa, New Zealand and Australia for over 25 years. In this time, he has learned various precision techniques that help reduce scarring and maximise results. Additionally, he is an expert at revision rhinoplasty surgery and works carefully on the site of prior incisions to minimise additional scarring. Many rhinoplasty procedures can be achieved through internal incisions with dissolving sutures, so there is little to no visible scars!
What Can I Expect During the Recovery Period?
The healing process varies for each client, but it is a crucial time, so you should take extra care and attention to follow any instructions provided to you by your surgeon. Typically, you will experience some swelling, bruising or redness in the first 24-72 hours following your surgery. This can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks to subside. Your surgeon will place a splint on the outside of your nose with soft dressings inside to help support your nose in the first six to seven days. Once that is removed, you will start to see gradual results as the swelling subsides. Prescribed pain medication can be taken to help reduce discomfort, but you should avoid wearing makeup, sunglasses or certain headpieces while your rhinoplasty heals.
When Will I See My Results?
With such individualised procedures like a nose job, it is difficult to give an estimate on when swelling with subside and the full results will be visible. For some patients, it can be as soon as two months following their initial surgery. However, patients who require more extensive treatment may take longer to achieve their final results, especially if additional operations are necessary. In some cases, patients opt for follow-up rhinoplasties later in life to help maintain the shape and size they desire.
Will I Need a Follow Up Surgery?
If this is your first nose job, a consultation is required before you can move forward. At Refine Cosmetic Clinic, we offer this completely free to all new patients – which can be up to $300 at other facilities. During this consultation, our surgeon will discuss your facial structure and your aesthetic goals and determine the best way to achieve a good nose shape. From there, he will design a personalised rhinoplasty plan to help you get one step closer to the beautiful facial profile of your dreams. Patients who need simple corrections will likely be able to achieve this with one procedure, while other patients who want more in-depth correction may require additional surgeries.
What Are the Risks Involved?
When asking yourself, “should I get a nose job?”, it is important to consider the risks involved with these types of surgical procedures. Discussing these with a knowledgeable surgeon can help give you a better understanding of their rarity and how susceptible you may be to certain side effects. Some of the risks involved with rhinoplasty surgery include:

  • Anaesthesia. Though our team is very experienced and qualified, the risks involved should still be discussed with your surgeon.
  • Infection. As with any surgery or open wound, the potential for contamination exists but is, thankfully, relatively isolated with rhinoplasty procedures.
  • Scarring. This is also a rarity thanks to the techniques involved with the procedure, but it is still a potential risk.
  • Numbness. Some patients report feeling a loss of sensation on the tip of their nose. While this is usually temporary, it may be lasting in some cases.
  • Nasal septal perforation. This rare condition causes a hole in the nasal septum, which may be corrected with surgery but is permanent in some cases.
  • Breathing difficulties. The healing process may put added strain on your nasal passages, causing difficulty breathing comfortably.
  • Skin discolouration or swelling. Bruising is common but may remain in some patients.
